So apparently the last patents for the Hitachi SuperH architecture (used as the DC's CPU) are expiring next year, and some of the designs are being open-sourced. [Link]
It made me think what the prospects for the DC's hardware to be replicated in another console. I can't see one being able to play licensed GD-ROMs, say, but I can see a potential secondary platform for new homebrew titles or even quickie ports of old titles.
Unlike the Saturn, Dreamcast electronics were not bullet-proof, and indeed both of mine are out of action. But I enjoy the platform and I think a hardware reboot of some sort would rejuvenate the community and give newcomers something to start with.
