Was it the Smooth top or the Rough top NES that came first?

I recently found out about this whole thing a while back, but I cant remember for sure how it fits together. The two toasters I have just happened to be one of each, and I at first thought it was Smooth first. But now I found another that is also smooth? Whats the deal? Anyone have any more info on how rare each is, when it changed, or why? Thanks
