Need Help! to upgrade old cfw 3.90 m33-2

Please help out, haven't used my psp 1000 regularly in 3yrs
and my current firmware is 3.90 m33-2

I have read numerous instructions but I fear if I mess up or upgrade incorrectly
my psp would brick and become useless.

How would I be able to upgrade the firmware and use my psp to its max
including other emulators and extras like gba or pstube for example
or change icons in the menu and enable me to play all recent games
with no brick or any problems

Any help would be appreciated.
