PSP-1001 5.50 GEN-D2 to 6.39 CFW

I have a PSP-1001 running 5.50 GEN-D2. I haven't done much with my PSP for a while but since Sony has given out two free games to everyone, I decided to pull out my PSP again. I downloaded the two games onto my PS3 and then transfered them to my PSP. When I try to play them, they won't play (error 80010087). I assume this is because I'm using an old firmware.

Can I just use the official updater (network update, for example) to 6.39 and then use one of the CFWs to re-hack it? If so, what is the most popular CFW (I see that there are multiple releases), and is there any reason I shouldn't update all the way to 6.39 (the latest FW)?
