Stuck at CFW 5.50 GEN-D3

Hi

I´m not actually stuck at 5.50 GEN-D3, but I´m not sure how to update my psp anymore. There are so many updates and I´m scared I would destroy the psp if I just installed one on random. There are many new games I want to play and that's why I want to upgrade it. But here comes my second quastion, if I update my psp can I still be able to play most of the old games? And yeah, how do I upgrade from where I'm?
I´m happy for any response and help.

PS. I got PSP 2000

EDIT: I noticed I wrote this on the wrong forum board since I´m new aswell, could someone move this to help board?

EDIT again: OBS, I saw this thread on the help board that I think might solve my problem, but its written 5.50, does it matter that I got 5.50 GEN-D3?
