Best LAN Games

I'm wondering what are the best online games that multiple people on a LAN can connect?
Games like CS:S would be great... but I don't want to have to buy multiple copies of the game.
So I'd prefer to find games that are either free, or that only require you to pay for one copy of the game but 2 or more people on a network can go online.
 
AvP2 is one of my all time favorite games, and the many LAN games we played Predator vs Marines or Aliens vs Marines was nothing like anything else tried. I guess the closest we came was HALO, but AvP2 had the tension even in mutliplayer.

I love CS:S too but some great ones I've found for LAN would be out of the "Age of" Series. I call it that because all of those games start with "Age of", You don't need to buy multiple disks if you know how to use DaemonTools and the series is: Age of Empires I, II, and III, plus Age of Mythology. They are all great games and I highly recommend them.
 
Yeah I enjoy dota aswell, well HoN is probably more attractive solution for a new player though.(Too skilled players in dota for newbs :P )
 
Command & Conquer series are always fun to play on a LAN, especially if you team up against some brutal computer enemies, they are sickly strong and hard to beat.
 
Anyone ever tryed EUO :D?
 
Counter Strike: source and should I dare to say Gears of war 2's LAN was awesome it's a different story for Xbox live though.
 
I'd say World of Warcraft, CS:S and DotA are the best games for LAN. It's hella fun!!
 
Get a decent gary's mod. Torrent it, it's safe cos it is a mod, not an actual paid game.
 
Everyone, he's asking for a game that is preferably free, considering he probably does not want to make his friends buy a game. I suggest Combat Arms by Nexon. You can set up your own game with just your friends. You can also create your own guild after reaching a certain rank. It's a great, free game.

If they wouldn't mind paying a small fee of just $10, go with Counter-Strike 1.6. After buying the game through Steam, you can download a dedicated server via the "Tools" tab. This will allow you to host your own server on your LAN free of charge.

When it is about LAN games, I would say the best available games out there are Counter Strike and Need For Speed (Most Wanted)
I often play these games with my friends and we enjoy them more than any other games.
